Ram nama payasakke purandara dasa song interpretation
In this song Purandara dasa says one can relish the sweet payasa called Rama with the Krishna nama sugar and mix it with the ghee called Vitthala and enjoy the taste.
Purandara dasa using a simple recipe with a metaphorical meaning; and using the ordinary connects the people with the divine. He says taking the names of different avatars or deities will enhance the flavour of your life. But we can go deeper into it and also interpret in a more metaphorical way. Each avatar embodied certain gunas and certain aspects of life which they excelled in. Which we should also embrace and and we should also learn these aspects from the avatars to enrich and enhance our personalities or personal lives. For example Rama embodied adherence to rules whereas Krishna embodied breaking the rules to enhance the dharma. So upholding the rules to enhance dharma-Rama and breaking the rules to enhance dharma by Krishna. We can embody both the qualities in our lives. So if we want to model ourselves on one type of personality we can do it and that is one of the strengths of Hinduism with its various avatars in contrast to having just one god, one embodiment of god. God can have multiple embodiments exemplifying different gunas. That is one of differentiating aspects of polytheism and its strength as each avatar embodies certain gunas and exemplifies it.
Then Purandara dasa describes the details needed to make this special payasam from the scratch. After bringing the wheat called honour or singlemindedness and grinding it in the mill of detachment and adding the buttermilk called simplicity and draw thin shavings.
So you start with ego but after you grind up your ego in the mills of detachment you then become humble. So in order to have the humility to surrender to the lord you need to grind your ego in the mill of detachment. Then you draw out the noodles from the dough of simplicity.
Then in the pot called heart boil the milk of emotion. I think here one important thing which he has mentioned is the combination of bhava and Buddhi. You need to have Bhakti ,devotion to the divine as well as be attuned to spiritual knowledge. So Purandara dasa talks about how combination is important. To begin with emotion and sense of surrendering yourself to the divine fructified with intellect.
Result of embodying the different gunas of divine, grinding the ego in the mill of detachment, binding bhava and Buddhi, cooking it in vessel of worship is Ananda. It is sense of fulfilment that you get in life from the ananda a sense of bliss. Then when you belch it is a visible sense of fulfilment you signal to the world that you have achieved the sense of bliss, ananda , where that bliss comes from surrendering yourself to Anand Murthy purandara Vitthala.
